  • Review: Hollywood Dirt by Alessandra Torre

In all honesty, I’ve had a hard time coming up with a review for this book.  Not because it was a bad but because I couldn’t quite figure out what I thought of it.  So, this is me, trying to put that into words.

I enjoy the famous person/ regular person trope and I’ve read it many ways.  I like the way Ms. Torre wrote the dynamic between Summer and Cole.  She (Summer) was completely aware of the kind of guy Cole was and had every intention of steering clear of his irresistible charms.  After being happily married for many years, his marriage implodes and he goes on a rampage that includes sleeping with every willing woman he could find. Plainly put, he had turned into a dawg.  Yes, dawg.  That’s MY Georgia girl showing 😉

So, Summer knew the guy was bad news and she needed this job to help her raise enough money to finally get out of town.  Getting involved with him is sooooo not the plan. Cole has been sent to the set, out in the country, with orders to “keep it in his pants”.  The media has been all over him and his exploits and that isn’t doing his reputation or the divorce proceedings he is going through, any favors.  Then he meets his “costar” and it all goes to hell.  Needless to say, they have crackling chemistry despite their apparent dislike for each other, which as we all know, eventually simmers into a nice bouillabaisse/stew of sexual tension.

First things first.  Cole needed to learn how to exist on his own as an adult without having an assistant at his beck and call.  Which happens.  He truly needed the time to just BE, with no one else around.  Which he got plenty of that in the middle of nowhere.  Cole takes time to go on runs and really think.  But don’t worry, Cole doesn’t get too lonely, Summer gives him a pet and that pet…well let’s just say that “Cocky” is a hilarious character in Hollywood Dirt.

Torre writes the town, Summer, Cole and the secondary characters in a way that makes you feel like you’re watching a movie.  She gives all of them a heart and soul that I enjoyed.  My only complaint, we that we had to wait to almost 75% of the book for them to get their crap together to figure out just how much they care for each other.  I’m the one that wants to see the rest of the love story and the end of the movie.  I wanted more of them together and how they adjust to their new life together.

When the door to the production trailer burst open, it brought with it a wave of heat and beauty. Cole looked up from the storyboards and locked eyes with Summer, who blew across the room at him like a tornado on tilt.

“There’s no love story between Ida and Royce.” Summer snapped, throwing down the script, pages fluttering down between them. In the small trailer, conversations stalled and he could feel the attention turn their way. “I’ve read the book. Three times!”

It was good to know that someone had read the damn book. Cole glanced down at her temper tantrum of a mess and back up, raising his eyebrows mildly. “It’s a movie,” he said, turning back to the storyboards. “The writers are adding some excitement. It’s normal. You’d know that if you were in this business.” The dig was unnecessary but he couldn’t help it. This woman turned him into the devil.

“I read the first script. The one you sent over with my contract. Ida and Royce hated each other. Why would Royce…” she snatched up a page from the ground and read out a line. “pushes Ida against the file cabinet and kisses her passionately.” She balled up the page and threw it down to the ground and he could see, in her eyes, the panic. Panic. An unexpected reaction.

“We’ll use that,” Don made the dangerous move of stepping in, putting a soft hand on her shoulder. “You don’t understand. The passion from their hatred will make it hotter.”

“No.” Summer said, her face hard, her eyes on Cole. “It doesn’t make it hotter. It makes it stupid.”

“Aww… come on, Summer.” Cole chided, stepping closer, his hand reaching out to pull at her wrist. She fought him, yanking it back and the moment of their bodies meeting didn’t happen. He leaned down and whispered, right against her ear, the smell of her apple-scented lotion enough to make him want to empty out the production trailer right that moment. “Sure it does.”

She jerked back and twisted away. “If he kisses me on camera I’m going to lose it.” She shot at Don, pointing an accusatory finger in Cole’s direction.

“I know you will,” Cole laughed, crossing his arms to fight from reaching out.  “You’ll fall apart under my mouth, baby.”

Summer screamed in response, her hands thrown up in frustration, and spun to leave, her script left behind, the slam of the exit door loud in the full production trailer.

“That went well,” Cole mused. He linked his hands and rested them on his head, rolling his shoulders back. Panic. She’d had panic in her eyes. Fuck.

“What do you expect?” Don said. “You threw this on her without warning. I told you we should have met with her this morning, gone over the changes to prepare her. But no – you just wanted to dump it on her via call sheets and sides.”

“Dump it on her? I was People’s Sexiest Man last year. She’s not mentally adjusting to a war camp for God’s sake. How hard is it to kiss me?”

“It’s actually three kisses,” a dark-haired PA to his left pointed out. “And a grope.”

He gave her a hard look and she withered a little.

“I’ll go talk to her,” Don said. “Eileen, you shoot #4 and I’ll talk to Summer. I want to try to get #14 shot at eleven so let’s get our asses in gear and get this done.”

“I’ll talk to her.” Cole stepped in. “You shoot #4 and I’ll talk to her.”

“No,” Don snapped. “With my luck you two would make up and any authenticity to the scene would disappear. Just stay away from her and be ready at eleven.”

Cole chewed on his cheek, then nodded. “Fine.” Don was right. He should stay away from her. Far. Far away.

  • Review: Silver Bastard by Joanna Wylde

    silver bastard book tour

Joanna Wylde is one of the most consistently well-written authors in the romance genre and I never have to worry about the quality of the book she writes.  I trust her and I’ve been looking forward to the new Silver Valley series.  While I enjoyed this book and I’m glad that I read it, it’s not my favorite book by Ms. Wylde.

Maybe it suffered a bit from worldbuilding?  First book in a series-itis?   I failed to connect to Puck and Becca and I’m really not sure why.  Puck is not a touchy-feely guy, he isn’t going to go all gooey and soft because he is not built that way.  He and Becca are thrown into each other’s lives quite savagely and their lives are never the same.  To his credit, Puck gets Becca out of a terrible home life and if it weren’t for him, she would have probably ended up like her mother. (Which is not a good thing)  After getting her out of there, Puck maintains his distance from Becca for years, although he is never far away and keeps an eye on her, making sure she is safe.  The connection between Puck and Becca, despite how they met, is undeniable no matter how hard they fight it.

Silver Bastard is well written and I enjoyed getting to know the Silver Valley world.  While I wasn’t crazy about Puck and Becca, I’m looking forward to more from this series.

Ignoring him, I settled back on my stool and surveyed the room. We sat in Becca’s section, and what I saw wasn’t making me happy. I knew she was a good waitress, but she’d just started here and it showed. Not only had she fucked up several orders, she didn’t quite seem to get the rhythm of the bar. That wasn’t my problem, though.

My problem was that despite these fuckups, nobody seemed to mind. I had a nasty suspicion this was due to her perky tits, friendly smile, and tight little ass that seriously just needed a bite taken right out of it.

She really, really needed to get a new job—every man in the place wanted her. Including me. Especially me. I hated them. All of them. I shifted uncomfortably, because just like every time I shared a room with her, my pants had gotten tight.

Torture. Becca was just so fucking fine on every level, and not just her looks. There was something about the way she carried herself . . . I couldn’t put my finger on it. Like she was dancing through life to some song nobody else could hear. Never met another woman like her—she wasn’t just sexy, she was a survivor and I admired that.

She’d grown up so much since the first time I’d met her. Bigger boobs, a nice fullness to her ass that was nowhere close to fat but would be perfect to hold tight while I fucked her. Her lips had plumped, too, and over the years she’d gained a sparkle in her eyes that turned her from pretty to 100 percent spectacular.

Not to mention how she’d tasted.

Nearly blew in my pants when I’d taken that mouth. Just the memory got me hard. Make that harder. Fucking basket case.

When I’d pulled up to find her sitting outside with Collins, a thousand murder scenarios ran through my mind. And yeah, I know I covered that already, but if anything ever deserved empha- sis, this was it. Collins needed to die. I didn’t care how nice he was. After that I’d throw Becca on the back of my bike and make a run for the hills . . .

Okay, so there were a few problems with the plan, the top one being she hated me. Or she should—I’d certainly given her cause. Boonie nudged me.

“Did I mention you’re pathetic? You want her, take her. Other- wise let it go because you’re an embarrassment to all men in general and to the Silver Bastards in particular.”

  • Review ~ The Love Letters ~ Ashley Pullo

Ok.  I don’t know how to rate this book. (Between 3.75 and 4.)

Let me start from the beginning.  I’ve had Ashley Pullo’s books on my TBR list for months…MONTHS.  The Album  and The Ballad have been sitting on my Kindle mocking me, so I moved them into a new collection I created that is my TBR asap collection.  So, when Ms. Pullo contacted me about The Love Letters, I wanted to make sure that I wouldn’t be spoiled in any way for the other two books.  She assured me that I would not and that the Love Letters are a “primer” for the other books.  So I said- bring it on.

First.  Natalie is a hot mess.  😉

Second.  She and Zach have absolutely incredible chemistry, while some may call it insta-love ( really more like insta-lust)  They bond physically pretty quickly and I was cool with that, like I said, their connection and chemistry was well written.  The first part of the book is a narrative of their time together before they are separated.  (Their email and letter correspondence follows and ends the novella)  I have to admit that I enjoyed the letters and emails the most, they were funny, sweet and passionate.

Ms. Pullo writes the kind of book I enjoy, intelligent, a little snarky and passionate.  After reading The Love Letters, I’m looking forward to reading The Album and The Ballad even more because I really felt like Natalie has some more growing up to do and frankly, I want to know WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!   If you enjoy Daisy Prescott or Penny Reid, you’ll enjoy Ms. Pullo.

  • Review: Loving You Is Easy by Wendy S. Marcus

    Loving-You-is-Easy-Wendy-S-Marcus

This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Marcus and I enjoyed it.  Shane and Brooke are from two different worlds, hers being a world of politics and privilege  and he is a soldier from New Jersey.  Now, don’t get me wrong, Brooke is not a snob.  She lives her life as quietly as possible as a teacher, while staying out of the spotlight of her father’s political aspirations. Her father has always been busy with politics and her mother is a jerk with concern for Brooke’s needs.  So, she has chosen to lead her life on her terms.  Shane and Brooke are sooooo very different.  While he is just a regular guy from Jersey, she is very refined and at times very proper.

Shane and Brooke meet via a pen pal program that Brooke set up at her school and through those letters, they get to know each other.  I’ll admit that I would’ve liked to have read those letters or read more about the evolution of their friendship.  When they first see each other when he returns home for a short visit, it’s clear that they have bonded through those letters.  I enjoyed the scenes when they meet face to face for the first time.  Shane is flirty and playful with Brooke and I liked his personality.  Shane has made it clear that he does not want a girlfriend and Brooke has no interest in being some guy’s quick piece of ass.  (For lack of a better term)  Brooke has some pretty serious baggage she totes around due to an incident when she was younger.  Enter Shane who is wildly attracted to her and things get interesting.

This one took a turn in a direction I really didn’t fully see coming.  It started out as a sweet and sensual story and then quickly transitioned in a pretty serious and timely narrative of the dangers of social media and cyber bullying.

I felt so horrible for Brooke, when the crap hit the fan, it just kept getting worse for her and she just had to sit back and let it work itself out.  Luckily, Brooke has some very good friends that are instrumental in making sure her innocence is proven.

While all of this is going on, Brooke gets to know Shane and is family.  His family is…interesting and I’ll admit that I found some of the members of his family somewhat annoying and some of the drama that ensued felt a little OTT.

During all of this, we meet Brooke’s best friend and Rory, Shane’s friend who was deployed with him.  I really liked both of them and I hope that we get a story for them.

Overall, this was a great read.  I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to reading whatever Ms. Marcus has in store for further books in this series.

Oh no, no, no. Sex was not on her agenda for the evening. Some dinner, enjoyable conversation, maybe another kiss or two and she’d be making the hour drive north to her condo in New York. Her clothes would remain on, all of them, at all times. Even though she’d known him for months, technically, tonight was only their first date.

Either he’d picked up on her “no sex” vibe or he’d been kidding around with her because he finished up with, “ . . . hang out, just the two of us, watch a few movies, and talk to each other face-to-face in the same room for a change.” Which sounded wonderful, but in his hotel room? The two of them all alone? Was she strong enough to resist the pull of attraction that had her wanting things she shouldn’t? At least not yet. Because if they had sex when he thought of her only as a friend he’d have no need to make her a girlfriend, to make them exclusive, long-term.

In the quiet hotel elevator, Shane watched Brooke. So damn beautiful in a soft yet strong, sweet yet sexy, classy yet regular girl sort of way—so different from the brash blue-collar bad girls that frequented his favorite North Carolina and New Jersey hangouts.

She was wealthy, smart, independent, and way too good for him by far.

Had he not been chosen for her pen pal program, there was no chance their paths in life would have ever crossed. Yet here he was, so close he could reach out and touch her, so hard with need he had to brace his duffle against the bulge in his pants to keep from scaring her off.

The doors opened and Shane motioned for Brooke to go ahead of him; it was the gentlemanly thing to do, but it also gave him a chance to check her out from behind. Her navy blue and white striped dress went down almost to the floor and outlined her rounded butt and slender thighs perfectly. A long side slit offered tempting glimpses of the smooth, tan skin of her long legs. An expensive-looking, ultrasoft white sweater covered her shoulders, and fashionable white strappy sandals accented her narrow feet.

Everything about Brooke turned him on—made him feel damn lucky to be with her. Too bad he didn’t have the same effect on her.

Shane wished he’d had his phone handy to snap a picture of the expression on Brooke’s face when she said, “This room is all bed.”

He smiled. After sleeping on an uncomfortable cot for too many months he’d opted for the king over two queens. Right this moment he couldn’t be happier he had. “Make yourself comfortable.” He motioned to the bed.

The look she gave him made him laugh. When he got it under control he told her, “Lie down. Sit down.” He pointed to a hard wooden chair pushed beneath a small desk crammed into the corner. “Whatever you’d like.” He tossed his bag onto the bed, unzipped it, and dug around for a clean change of clothes, making sure to locate a long-sleeved shirt that would keep his tattoos hidden. “I’m going to take a quick shower.”

Standing in the entrance to the bathroom he couldn’t resist teasing her some more—Who knew? Maybe if he kept it up she’d give in and agree—so he stuck out his head and said, “Just letting you know I am purposely leaving this door unlocked so you can come in and join me. Consider this an invitation if you need one.”

“There you go again.” Sitting primly on the corner of the bed, Brooke looked up from what he assumed was the room service menu. “Confusing me with a girlfriend.”

The number one problem with good girls is no sex without a commitment. He sort of respected that. But it didn’t keep him from continuing his pursuit, for the fun of it as much as to get her between the sheets of his big, inviting bed. “Haven’t you ever heard of friends with benefits? I am very open to that type of friendship.”

“Of course you are.” She lowered the menu and placed it in her lap. “Unfortunately, I don’t play that game.”

Unfortunate indeed. Cold shower here I come.
