  • Review: Bishop’s Queen by Cristin Harber

I swear I feel like such a broken record when it comes to Cristin Harber but in a good way.  See, a little history lesson is in order here. Three years ago, I had just started my blog, it had been up and running for a few months and I got a review request from an author I had never heard of and she had five books releasing. (I still have those emails, lol.) It was in my genre of choice, so she sent me book one, Winter’s Heat, I loved it and soon after that, she sent me all 5 books/novellas. I was in love. Romantic Suspense and Military Romance demand a delicate balance of plot and passion. I like a healthy dose of both and if it’s too much sex and a weak suspense/action plot, you’ll likely lose me.  I’d like to think of myself as a connoisseur of those genres as I’ve read and continue to read in those genres still. Not to mention, I cut my romantic suspense teeth on early Maya Banks KGI and Lori Foster’s Men Who Walk on the Edge of Honor, so my standards were already high.

Three years later, I’m still reading/devouring everything she writes. Harber continually sets the standard and then raises the bar in the genre. Her characters are fresh and interesting and the plot lines are completely unique.  I have to admit, that I always favored Roman in Hart Attack. I salivated in anticipation over his book, so for me, he was always my standard for Titan men. Roman, honey, Bishop is giving you a run for your money.

Not only is Bishop an interesting guy, Ella is an interesting and entertaining character as well. Usually, the whole reality tv character doesn’t work for me but she also hosts her own Eco Ella blog and YouTube channel.  She’s completely committed to her job and she practices what she preaches as an environmental warrior. Harber took a subject that I wasn’t quite sure that I’d be interested in and wove it into a refreshing and intriguing plotline.  Bishop and Ella have a previous connection, a very personal one, in fact, that lays the groundwork for their current undeniable attraction.  Their chemistry is CRAZY good and Bishop doesn’t shy way from showing Ella how he feels about her, once they let those feelings loose, not to mention there is some serious BUMP AND GRIND Magic Mike action going on with him. YOWZA.

One thing I’ve always said that Harber excels at is creating unique characters and plotlines. It can be very easy to create characters that bleed easily into others, especially in this genre. All of the Titan men are alphas to varying degrees and they wield those traits with their women, carefully because Harber has given them absolutely glorious female characters to pair up with. They have various  backgrounds, careers, and are not ones to bleed into the wallpaper or fall victim to the TSTL (Too Stupid to Live) syndrome, which still runs rampant these days. (Isn’t there a vaccine for that now?)

Three years later and eight books into the Titan series and Harber is still kicking ass. Harber has my complete respect and admiration and I salute her.

And yes, this was a totally gratuitous use of a JJ Watt gif, he’s totally Titan worthy.

  • New Release and Review: Live Wire by Cristin Harber

Previously, Live Wire was only available on iTunes, now you can get it at all retailers!! 🎉

I’m going to make this simple for you, if you’re a Titan fan at all, you’ll want to read this book.  It’s chock full of Sugar, Lexi, Parker and Boss Man, Jared goodness.  There’s also some serious nerd/glasses porn that made me swoon and laugh.

Jared aka Boss Man is adding to the Titan team and Lexi and Sugar decide that they need to check out the possible new recruits.  OF COURSE, hilarious hijinx ensue. With typical Sugar charm and badassness, she vets the new recruit while getting in and out of a bit of trouble, with the help of a few good men. 😉

After getting in and out of trouble… it’s baby time for Jared and Sugar.  I’m an absolute sucker for a badass like Jared being brought to his knees by his love for his ladies. Seriously, this is such a sweet side of Jared and I melted into a pile of goo.

Don’t forget, we also get to meet Bishop, the subject of Ms. Harber’s Titan book!  I have to say that I can’t wait for his book.  I know, I say that about every book she writes but I REALLY mean it!

The rhythmic pounding of the man running for his life in between Sugar’s and Lexi’s treadmills was more than enough up-close proof that Bishop O’Kane was as physically fit as his profile said. This gym catered to professional bodybuilders but was empty with the exception of one other person and staff. It was elite and niche, and Sugar had basically used her pregnant stomach and her hormones to get them a day pass.

Not exactly Titan-level detective work, but this was more a girl’s trip than anything else… right? Her phone buzzed as she and Lexi walked lazily on either side of their unknowing target.

Lexi: What have we learned? I’m bored.

Sugar: I was bored at home. This was something to do.

    Lexi: Right.

Lexi: I think he knows we know each other.

Lexi: Shoot! He’s looking at both of us.

    Lexi: SUGAR!

Sugar got off her treadmill and walked calmly to the bathroom. The second she was out of sight, she pulled her phone back out.

Sugar: Do I have to teach you how to creep up on a dude!?!?

    Lexi: Maybe…

She tittered to herself. Well, that was probably true. For as hot as Lexi was, she was clueless when it came to the art of flirting. Though they weren’t flirting. But still, spying on a guy took a certain level of finesse that Lexi didn’t have.

Sugar: We need a new game plan.

Sugar: Does he still look suspicious of us?

    Sugar: Hello?

Sugar: Hey, Thelma, it’s Louise. Why’d you go radio silent?

    Lexi: We have a problem

Sugar: On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 is we need to hit the pancake house again, and 10 is I have to hit up GUNS for the ammo Jared wouldn’t let me have, gimme a number.

She grabbed her bag from a locker and wrestled out of her exercise pants and back into leather pants, which—thank the Lord for maternity adaptation—were more comfortable.

Sugar’s screen blinked with the text.

    Lexi: 10. 10. 10.

Sugar: Easy, killer. On my way.

But the text wouldn’t send. The little circle kept circling. No signal. Ugh. What the hell? She pushed out the door to find the hallway dark. A tickle of adrenaline crept up her neck, and she slowed her pace.

“Hello?” A Russian accent called into the bathroom where she had just been.

Training and instinct made Sugar drop to the floor, listening to the voice continue to call and the person go in and out of the locker rooms and whatever rooms were down the other hallway.

Her pulse picked up. She could feel the blood thumping in her neck and in her stomach, which was a change from the norm. But all in all, this was no different than creeping like a shadow on any other job. Except she didn’t know who or what she was dealing with, and she had to hide what felt like an additional few feet of her stomach from view while trying to figure out what the double deuces was happening.

She tried her cell phone again. Shoot. She got nothing but a spinning circle and a no service signal. Clearly, somewhere in the building was a cell-phone jammer, which meant this was more of a professional job than a slam-and-bam robbery.

    Okay… what to do?

Slinking down the hallway, she heard no exercise equipment clinking and clanking. No men throwing heavy things. No people grunting as they lifted heavy objects for personal enjoyment. There was only the empty blare of music that, now that all was abandoned and quiet, played far too loud. Her phone continued to cycle without a signal, and Sugar’s eyes searched for signs of anyone in the building—most importantly, Lexi. And where had that searching Russian man gone? She needed a weapon. Fast.

    She checked her phone again.

Nope. The hell with it. She tucked it in her back pocket. Across the open floor were hand weights. She could grab a few jump ropes or one of the calisthenics bars while she was there. But crossing the gym was too dangerous. With a view of nothing but treadmills, elliptical machines, and stair climbers, she had nothing but magazines to smack a bad dude with. Nothing deadly.

So the plan for the moment was to keep against the wall and head for the main desk. Surely there was a pair of scissors. A stapler. Hell, she could be deadly with a phone cord. All she needed was the right angle. But really, Sugar stressed about Lexi.

She crept around another corner of the main gym. No one was there.

No Lexi. No Bishop. No random meatheads. No guy with a Russian accent searching for rogue people hiding and creeping.

“What is going on?” Her pulse pounded in her neck, and confusion covered every thought. Only Emergency Exit signs illuminated the room, and the place was eerie.

Her quiet question went unanswered, and the baby took that moment to kick. “Easy, tater tot. I’ve got this.”

  • Author spotlight: Delta Revenge by Cristin Harber

Today, it’s my pleasure to feature Cristin Harber and her most recent book, Delta Revenge.  Ms. Harber has a quite a long history with SSBR.   I’ve been reading and reviewing her books from almost 3 years and every book is a winner for me.  Yep, I every single one.

Delta Revenge will go down as one of my favorites and that’s saying a lot.  There is a distinction for me where my “favorites” are concerned, if it goes on my re-read pile, that means something. (Now that I think about it, there are a lot of Harber books in that pile.) Delta Revenge is going in the re-read pile. I loved it that much!  Javier and Sophia are such an incredible combination,in that, he’s a badass and she is too!  Javier has no idea to what extent she is but the characterization totally works.

Sometimes, as writers write books in series and the same genres, their characters can begin to feel the same.  I think this can happen very easily in the romantic suspense genre as the characters tend to have very specific characteristics. As far as I’m concerned, this isn’t the case with Harber’s books.  Every male character is distinctive and the storylines do not ever feel recycled. Revenge certainly has a very interesting setup and the book keeps hitting you with action-packed moments.  The other side of the coin is her Harber’s ability to temper action and suspense with absolutely smokin’ hot sexytimes.

    Get to know Cristin:

Can you start by introducing yourself to the readers that maybe don’t know you yet? Hi! I’m Cristin Harber, I’m a New York Times bestseller of sexy romantic suspense, military romance, and contemporary/new adult romance. I love writing alpha heroes and strong women, crazy situations, scorching hot scenes, and more often than not, things blow-up in my books.

Can you tell us a little about your journey to becoming an author? I’ve wanted to be a published author since I was a kid.  I actually have my Young Author award from 6th grade framed in my office! Haha. For a while I’d pitched the traditional route, but ultimately, I found that indie publishing was where I was most comfortable. I’m entrepreneurial by nature and it makes me very happy to run my own publishing company.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? Before I wrote romance I penned political thrillers.

Do you have any rituals when you write? I have a treadmill desk that I stroll on while writing. Sometimes I wander my neighborhood when I’m stuck on a section I can’t figure out.

Favorite snack? I’m a big fan of Greek yogurt (anything with Hazelnut and chocolate!) and Stacy’s Garlic and Parm pita chips, and of course, coffee with way too much milk and sugar.

Favorite drink? Coffee and the occasional Pepsi. It’s all about the caffeine.

Favorite song right now: Florida Georgia Line’s H.O.L.Y. But honestly, pretty much anything they sing is my favorite.

Last book you read: Nikki Sloane’s Sordid. I don’t usually read dark romances, but she’s a friend and her book was banned by Amazon. I have a problem with censorship (and there’s honestly no reason for the book to be unlisted, I’ve read much, much worse in the sub-genre). It’s a great read, wonderful characters, and I’m glad I picked it up! If dark romance is your thing, this is a sexy book!

Favorite movie of all time: Ummmm, hmm. Of all time? I’m going to skip this question. I’ve never been able to pick one of anything. Haha!

What’s your favorite book trope? To read and to write… I love happily ever after stories and one of my favorite tropes is best friend’s older brother and friends to lovers. But asically, I just love love. If they fall in love, I’m with them in in the story.

Who are some of your favorite authors and books? I love Kristen Ashley and Maya Banks among many, many others. Old favorite loves include the Twilight series! And I constantly re-read Kristen Ashley’s Unfinished Heroes series.

What is the best piece of advice you have received in your writing career so far? Don’t stop. Keep writing, keeping writing. Then write some more. Not all the words will be pretty. But there’s no excuse. If you want it bad enough, you do it. So that’s what I try for. Write as often as I can. Find the words that tell a story good enough for my readers, ignore my excuses, and keep going.

What’s coming up next for you? There’s another Titan book in the works! Bishop’s story is coming along and he should be available later this summer. And as always, I have some #supersecretprojects up my sleeve.

“You’re mine, Emma.  But really, pretty mama, I’m all yours.”

Emma, Gray and sweet Cally finally get their happily ever after in Only Forever.  I really appreciated the way Ms. Harber brought this series to an end. I was a bit concerned as to how some issues would get resolved but…ahem Emma’s night job.  But it all came to light in a very organic way.  You’ll see what I mean. 😉

This isn’t going to be a long meandering review.  Simply put, I enjoyed this new format that Ms. Harber jumped into even though..it was NA.  Tying in the Titan world is a sure way to entice me and I hope  we will get an update on Grayson and Emma in other Titan/Delta books.

When I finished this one, I felt all warm and gooey inside as Emma and Grayson came full circle to each other. The ending was so sweet and I truly enjoyed Only Forever.

“I’ve done nothing for you to give me that trust, but I need you to anyway.”

I’m not pressed against his chest anymore. The warmth that encapsulated me moments ago is gone, but I feel different. Life’s shifted—I’ve been hanging on this roller coaster for years, and now it’s as if we’re cautiously slipping toward smooth sailing. The lump in my throat eases, and my eyelids lift, my gaze falling on the most handsome man I’ve ever seen.

“What do you say?” He inches closer.

“I love you, Grayson.” Deep breath. “When it comes to us, I’m all in.”

  • Review : Only for Her by Cristin Harber

    ofh-quote3

I had very high hopes for this one.  There were things in the first one that I wasn’t crazy about (just a personal preference, mind you) and I was hopeful that with character maturity, I’d enjoy this one more.  Well, I did.  I totally did!  When I finished it, I immediately did two things, 1. Took a deep breath 2. Ran to Facebook and demanded that Cristin Harber give me volume 3.  Um yeah, not my best moment ever.  In a nutshell, Emma believes Grayson is dead and well, he isn’t and all he wants to do is find Emma.  I appreciated the depth of his love for her and how he stopped at NOTHING to get to her.

“You show up, and we end up in bed.  What kind of girl does that make me?”

Easiest answer I’ve had all night.  “It makes you mine.”

The moments following their reunion were intense, heartbreaking and passionate. Gray has some serious issues to deal with where women are concerned and how thinks that all he does is let them down.

Learning about a daughter he didn’t know he had was an intense moment for him and I ached for him.  I ached for both of them, Emma, for working so hard by herself to create a life for her and her daughter Cally and for Grayson and the horrible things he had endured in his life and during his deployment.

If there were two people who deserved a break or two and an epic HEA, it’s Grayson and Emma. I cannot wait for volume 3, Only for Us, which releases April 14th.

The Only series is sweet, passionate and completely addictive!!

  • Review: Only for him by Cristin Harber

    ofh-releaseday

So, I’m a huge fan of Cristin Harber.  Everything she has written, I have loved and I’ve often said that she is a talented enough writer to branch out into other genres.  Only Him is not Ms. Harber’s first foray into the New Adult genre. Sweet Girl was her first book written in the genre (part of the Titan series) and it blew me away.  The characters were older and more mature in Sweet Girl than they are in this initial installment.

When I originally read Only For Him, I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about it and honestly, there were some aspects of it that I wasn’t crazy about.  To be clear though, the things that I wasn’t crazy about are purely things that as a reader of the NA genre, I’m just not crazy about in general.  Internal monologues are a hot button for me, they seem to bother me more, the younger the character is. Emma and Grayson are young and immature and understandably insecure.  So yeah, I wasn’t exactly digging that part.  But that’s ok!

I went back through the book and my highlights and I have to say that I enjoyed it more on the second run through. I have a great amount of hope for Emma and Grayson as they mature and I hope that I get to read more of the Cristin Harber voice that I totally go crazy for.

    isntakiss

Grayson and Emma have a really sweet love. It’s a genuine and very deep they love that they feel for each other and I appreciated that aspect of the story.  Grayson is a guy that you just want to hug and take care of and all he wants to do is escape from the hell of his life and his father.  Emma is his escape.

This is a serial, please keep that in mind as you are reading.  Yes, this book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and it fast forwards in time a bit.  Despite my personal preferences, I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment of the series!  🙂

  • Review & 10 Questions w/ Roman: Hart Attack by Cristin Harber

I think we all have a series where, you meet a character that you kind of become obsessed with.  Let’s say you meet that character pretty early on in the series, say book one or two.  That’s nice isn’t it?  And then the author proceeds to TORTURE you, giving you little pieces of the character and possibly introducing a love interest a couple of books before said lusted after character.  Are you still with me?  Good.

In case you haven’t caught on yet, Roman Hart, is that character for me.  I wanted his story from the moment he jumped off the page in Garrison’s Creed.  Actually, he didn’t jump off the page, so much cuss right off of it.  That’s how we meet him, cussing at Cash.  Ha! Roman is surly. He’s been through a lot, everything with Nicola and now it seems it’s his turn to fall head over heels in love with a woman who is going to challenge him every step of the way.

Beth.  Our girl Beth is formidable and yet quite vulnerable down deep and she has wrapped herself in her work to function in her life.  Beth carries a huge amount of sadness and guilt around and I really just wanted to hug her.  (Actually, I really wanted her to let Roman hug her) She knows that Roman is her Achilles Heel but feels the undeniable pull towards him.  It’s almost comical the dance the two of them do around each other.

Like all of the Titan women, she is no slouch and Lord knows she has to be a badass in some way to be able to deal with Roman.  Let’s face it, he can be kind of jerk and he makes no apologies for that and it’s rather endearing to me in a “I’m an alpha giving you a hard time because I care about you” way.

“I didn’t say you were a booty call, Beth.” He left the door open and walked down the hall.

“Come in or leave.  Either way, shut the door.”

Freakin’ attitude problem.  “You’re a jerk.”

    “Surprise.”

“The asshole routine isn’t a good look for you, just so you know.”

Though, the shirtless look was.  Carefully, she stepped into his house and prayed that he’d put a shirt on.

    Well, kinda.

To say that there was a fair amount of verbal sparring in this one would be an understatement. (Also the kind of verbal sparring where you just want them to finally throw down and get naked)  I enjoyed the give and take of Roman and Beth, they were well matched and complemented each other.  Professionally, they worked well together too and I really enjoyed that aspect of the book. (I’m not even going to go into how hot the sexytimes were.  Just trust me.)  Oh and there’s Roman suit porn.  YES.  Roman in camo and cargos is one thing but the thought of Roman in a dress shirt and suit jacket makes MAH knees all wobbly.  Good googly moogly.

Let’s talk about the Titanverse.  Yes- that’s my new name for it…I’m trademarking that name.  TITANVERSE.  The whole gang showed up and I freaking loved it.  Sugar, who I enjoy more and more made a memorable appearance and of course, cracked me up.  Hell, they all made an appearance!  I love Titan family reunions.  Ahhhhh.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the bromance between Cash and Roman?

    “Doesn’t your wife feed you?”

Cash ignored him.  “So who was the lucky lady?”

    “It’s not like that.”

“Man, you broke out the crescent rolls.  Of course it’s like that-”  Cash pivoted, head tilted.  “Is a Beth thing?”

    “No”

“Not a thing?  Or not Beth?”

Roman stared at the rolls. “If you choked and died this minute, I’d be okay with it.”

Awww see?  I love these boys.  Oh…so um I kinda got to ask Roman my favorite 10 questions (from Inside the Actors Studio) and he DID NOT disappoint.

Hey, Straight Shootin’, thanks for letting me drop by. *rubs hands together* Ten questions, I’m ready. Whatcha got?

    1. What is your favorite word? Favorite word… Well, let’s see.
Favorite word? Easy, it’s “dude.” It’s the perfect word. It means what the hell, or it gets someone’s attention. Or it shows a serious level of annoyance.

    “Dude, that’s awesome.”

    “Dude, let it go.”

    “Dude…”

I guess it could sound kind of like I’ve gone all Cali-surfer guy on you, but trust me when I tell you, that word works the military-black ops scene well.

    2. What is your least favorite word?

Special.  It’s awful. Whoever thought of special never wanted a guy spouting it off. “Oh, that’s special, Beth.” See what I mean? Doesn’t work. Not unless I say, “Oh, he’s special, Beth.” And it generally goes hand-in-hand with some job she’s working and I pretty much hate the asshat who she happens to work with. Gregori Naydenov—he’s special. In a I-wanna-kick-his-butt kind of way. Maybe that makes me a brute, but that’s fine. Long as I’m not special.

    3. What turns you on?

*Laughs and shakes his head* There’s a certain feisty, curly-haired spy that can do anything, and I think it’s hot. But, general terms, a chick that can throw back a beer and shoot some pool? Hot. A woman who knows how to sway her ass to get my attention? It’s been known to work. But, God, give me a smart lady with a sassy mouth and it will kill me not to kiss her.

    4. What turns you off?

    Appletinis.

    5. What sound do you love?
*tilts head, gives a look* Not sharing that. But let’s just say when I hear it, the world could be falling apart and I won’t give a damn. (And neither will Beth.)

    6. What sound do you hate?

There was a time when nothing would slow my roll if a Titan job was on the line. The second I had the go order, I was running toward the helicopter. But, things have changed. If my girl’s in my arms and the phone rings with a job, I’ll cringe a little before letting go. Don’t get me wrong. I love my job—I live and breathe Titan. But, I also live and breathe someone else now too.

    7. What is your favorite curse word?
Fuck. Not very creative but gets the job done and fits almost every situation.

“Fuck, I’m in a tight spot.”

    “Fuck, my woman looks good.”

“Fuck, Straight Shootin’ probably doesn’t want me eff-bombing all over their page.”

    8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

No idea… Oh, man, let me think… I could rate and review tactical weapons. But I don’t know if there’s much of a career in that.

Hmm. Totally outside the military spectrum, I could probably fake my way through a chef’s job. I can cook the hell out of some grub. That’s a little known fact about me. So a chef.

    9. What profession would you not like to do?

I couldn’t sit at a desk. I couldn’t counsel the grieving. *rubs a hand over my face* If I can’t blow something up in the general course of business, it’s probably not a job for me. So desk jockeying or sales would send me to the grave faster than an IED.

    10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates

I’d love him to say, “Job well done.” Whenever there’s a Titan job, that means someone’s getting hurt and someone might die. Truthfully, I enjoy taking the bad guys out. I’m a protector. A soldier. I do what’s right, even if it’s messy. That is why God put me on this earth, and I hope to get a high five from the Big Guy when I get there.
