I had extremely high hopes for the third part of The Elements of Chemistry series and Ms. Reid did not disappoint me one single bit.  She could’ve thrown Martin and Kaitlyn back together instead, she allows them take their time.

I really loved that they took their own sweet time and spent time together in a non-sexual way, which was what they should’ve done from the very beginning.  Kaitlyn and Martin spend almost a year away from each other and during that time, they do a lot of growing up and changing.  Clearly, they needed that time to examine their own lives and decide what they really wanted to do.

When they finally circle back around to each other (and let’s face it, they are totally MFEO-madeforeachother) they are finally ready to be in a mature relationship with each other.  The pull between them was completely undeniable and the UST was painful at times, but I appreciated the development of the relationship.  When Kaitlyn and Martin finally get back together for good, it could not be more right.  Sigh.

Penny Reid, thank you so much for taking your time with Martin and Kaitlyn in Capture, you’ve certainly captured my devotion…once again.

Edited to add– I was looking for something to say about this book on FB and how it’s the last book and I’m kinda sad. One of my favorite songs came to mind, an oldie but a goodie by Crowded House.  (Is my age showing?) “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream it’s over…”

  • Mandy reviews: Can’t Resist A Cowboy by Elizabeth Otto

Ok.  I’m experiencing technical difficulties so, I’m writing this review from my written notes.  Normally, I go through my highlights on my digital copy and relive reading the book.  Well for some reason, I can’t access it to enjoy the rereading.  I really wanted to get this review out there, so here I am.

In a nutshell… I LOVED it.  Let me say though, that I am a huge fan of this author and this series and I have been anxiously awaiting Levi’s book.  The wait was almost too much for me and I needed my Paint River fix.

It was totally worth the wait!!! Carrie and Levi have an incredible connection with each other that dates back to their childhood.  Levi, broke Carrie’s heart when he left Paint River, but he had good reasons and frankly, Carrie needed to get out of Paint River for her health.  When Carrie comes back to visit her father and their farm, the connection between she and Levi is still very much alive and cracklin’.  (This would be where I’d insert a super sexy excerpt or quote, so use your imagination) Let me just say that the scene when Carrie first comes back to town and goes to a local bar is hilarious.  Ms. Otto’s humor is one of the reasons why I love her books.  She combines the sexy and the funny so very well.  I love the Heywood brothers when they get together and there is a drinking scene that is hilarious.  It is not to be missed.

Levi really is the perfect match for Carrie.  He has known her almost all of her life and he understands her medical condition ( a diabetic condition) and what she needs.  She grew up with her father making decisions for her and she values her independence despite the difficulties that her diabetes creates for her and her future.

Levi has his own physical challenges after being injured while deployed and he has adapted himself and his physical activity in response to the injuries to his leg.  The man has a very physical job, riding horses and working the farm and his legs get sore. Luckily, Carrie has some massage experience and is able to offer him some relief…lucky guy.

Carrie and Levi both have personal issues and they both have the ability to help each other, it’s a matter of accepting the help. Not to mention how much these two love each other. Holy moly.  (Insert another sweet/sexy quote here)  Anyhoo, I really enjoyed this book and I’d love to read more from this series.  My fingers are crossed for another Paint River book!

  • Elements of Chemistry Review- Heat by Penny Reid

    HeatTour

I’m going to admit that there was a fair amount of whimpering when I read the last page of this book.  Yes, it ends in a cliffhanger and once again, I’m okay with that.

In Heat, we really get some HEAT.  Holy moly, Martin and Kaitlyn really light up the pages with their chemistry and sexytimes!!! But do not assume that all this one is about is the physical aspect of their relationship.  One could assume that Martin is nothing but a smart rich guy but Heat fills in the holes where his background is concerned.  His family is nothing to brag about and are nothing if not extremely callous and horrible people.  Martin does everything he can to keep his life separate from his messed up family.

Kaitlyn experiences a new part of herself during the week she spends with Martin.  She certainly discovers herself sexually, I mean, who wouldn’t with a guy like Martin?  Good googly moogly.  I think a woman could lose her virginity just standing in the same room with him, much less removing clothing.  I digress.  Kaitlyn begins to explore the possibility of doing more with her life than going into science.  Going into the sciences is what she feels like to expected of her, not necessarily what she really wants to do or is passionate about. During her week with Martin, she realizes that music is her true passion but how can she actually pursue her true passion without disappointing her family and their expectations.

I truly enjoyed the time that Kaitlyn and Martin spent together.  They have an easy going connection with each and their banter is hilarious and entertaining.  I loved book 2 in this series and I cannot wait to see how Ms. Reid winds up the “saga” of Kaitlyn and Martin.

    “What are you doing?”

I lifted my eyes at the sound of Martin’s voice, but not immediately. I finished the paragraph I was reading, then I looked up, holding my place in the book with my thumb.

He was dressed in swim trunks and he was wet, with beads of water dripping down his chest. As such, he looked super hot. However, only the right side of his body was visible as the door blocked the other side. His hand was still on the doorknob and he leaned a tad to one side, into the room.

My eyes wandered over his form and I allowed myself to appreciate the beauty of Martin Sandeke like I might admire the beauty of a cold, soulless statue. Physically, he was a magnificent male specimen: corded muscle, long limbs, and rigid angles. Even his temples were drool worthy, especially since I knew his head housed a giant—albeit mismanaged—brain. Truly, he was one of our finest. His ancestors should really give themselves a big pat on the back.

A little pool of water had gathered at his feet, which made me wonder how long he’d been standing in the doorway. My eyes traveled upward again and I noticed he wore an angry expression. He looked livid.

I started a little at the heated annoyance in his stare. Then I glanced around the laundry room, searching for the source of his anger. I found that I was still alone. Therefore, I surmised his fury must be directed at me.

But, just to be sure, I said, “Who? Me?”

“Yes. You,” he growled, then stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. “What are you doing in here?”

I raised the book and tipped my head toward it. “I’m reading.”

Martin exhaled loudly, another growl. “I can see that, Parker. But why the fuck are you in here reading?”

I frowned at his use of profanity, my shoulders bunching with tension. I realized I’d gotten used to it, how often he cussed; I’d accepted it as part of him. But that was before he’d left me standing at the entrance to a party I didn’t want to attend, and that was before I’d seen him kissing a random girl.

“It’s the first sequel to The Three Musketeers. I’ve been meaning to read it. I found it on the shelf in the library—or living room, or whatever room. There are too many rooms in this house, so I don’t know what half of them are called.”

Martin gritted his teeth, and I got the distinct impression he wanted to strangle me. “Parker. This is a party. And you’re in the laundry room? Reading?”

I paused a beat to make sure this wasn’t a trick question. When I could find nothing amiss with his interrogation, I nodded slowly. “Yes. This is a party. I am in the laundry room reading.”

“Why? What is wrong with you?”

My mouth opened and closed but no words arrived, because his questions continued to confuse me. Finally, I admitted, “Martin, I don’t know what you want me to say or why you appear to be upset. I found the book when I was in one of the several rooms with lots of books. I’ve been meaning to read it. So I picked it up and found a quiet place. Why are you so angry?”

He charged at me and I ineffectually scrambled backward on the washing machine. In less than two seconds he’d pulled the book from my hands, slapped it on the counter at my left, and braced his arms on either side of my legs, leaning forward.

I realized he’d made me lose my page in the book. I decided to ignore my urge to vocalize this complaint, because his eyes were beyond heated.

They were incensed blue flames. I braced myself, my gaze wide and watchful, and flinched when he lifted a hand. I relaxed a smidge when he used it to push my hair off my shoulder.

When he spoke, his voice was low, strained, like he was trying very hard to control his temper. “I brought you here as my date. That was our agreement.”

I nodded once. “Yes. I know.”

“And, instead of talking to people or having fun, you’re in here reading a book.”

I kept my voice even and calm, tried to sound soothing. “I am having fun. I’m reading a book.”

  • Review: Homefront by Jessica Scott

The truth was he was a better soldier than a husband or father, and he always had been.  Hell, there was a reason why he worked so hard.  He was good at the army.  It wasn’t a job to him.  It was who he was.  It was what he was good at. He knew how to lead soldiers, how to get their confidence up to be the first man in the stack.

As far as I’m concerned, Ms. Scott always manages to bring something different and interesting to the table.  Of the many books she has written where soldiers come back home, she has not tackled this particular subject so thoroughly as she does in Homefront.

Gale screwed up.  He knew he was screwing up when he was doing it but he really didn’t know what else to do.  The army was easy and leading his men was his calling.  Being a father and husband is a whole ‘nother ball game.  Gale and Mel were very young when they married, throw in a baby and being separated from each other and it just made for a very bad combination.

He hadn’t been a good enough man to hold on to her.  And when he was honest with himself, everything he’d done over the last decade and a half had been to make himself a better man.

Mel has her hands full with a teenage Jamie who has some pretty serious issues of her own on top of just being a teenager.  It’s a lot for two parents to handle, much less a single parent.  Mel is tired and barely holding it together.  Enter Gale.  He’s been wanting to get closer to Mel and Jamie for years, in an effort to be involved in their lives and just maybe heal the rift between he and Mel.  Gale TOTALLY loves Mel still. To her credit, she realizes that she may have made some hasty decisions due to her own immaturity.  Even though fifteen years have passed, their feelings for each other were very close to the surface, so close that they couldn’t keep their hands and lips off of each other!

She wasn’t sure where things were going but it was such a departure from the way things had been.  A good one. Gale the man not Gale the memory of the boy he’d been.  There was power in his hands now, confidence in his touch.  A smoothness in the way he stroked her body that left her breathless and shaking and wanting more.  So much more.

Gale dealing with a teenage girl was touching and downright hilarious at times.  It was like diffusing a bomb. Ha!  I loved the way Gale waded in and proceeded to mediate between Jamie and her mom.  Jamie really needed her Dad, she needed his love, affection and guidance.

This was a touching and raw depiction of second chance romance and I really enjoyed it.  I’m definitely looking forward to more from this series.

  • Review: Attraction by Penny Reid

    AttractionTour

This year, several of my favorite authors have thrown their hat in the New Adult genre ring.  Upon hearing this, I always get nervous. Then I have to remind myself that I trust those authors and that I’ll be a big girl and try it out anyway.  It’s not that I dislike the genre, in fact, I’ve read some really great NA books.  But some of the worst and most annoying ones I’ve read have come from that genre.  Over the top angst seems to be the dominating factor in many NA books and frankly, I tire of that easily.

Luckily, Attraction is not annoying in any way.  In fact, it’s interesting, sexy and highly entertaining.  Kaitlyn is highly intelligent, funny and honest.  Martin is also highly intelligent and ridiculously wealthy, popular and he is ROWER.  Hello!  Their banter is hilarious and I thoroughly enjoyed their back and forth.  Attraction is the KEY word because Martin and Kaitlyn are very much attracted to each other!! OMG, the sparks fly!!!

As much as I love Martin, Kaitlyn is a pretty amazing character.  She is completely guileless and doesn’t play games.  In fact, she does not want to be in the spotlight at all.  She doesn’t realize how beautiful she is or if she does, she doesn’t draw attention to herself in that way.  She finds it hard to believe that someone like Martin would be interested in her and she puts him through the wringer.  She doesn’t trust him at all.

There is a cliffhanger. But don’t get your panties in a twist because Ms. Reid gives you part of the next book immediately. Personally, I’m ok with cliffhangers as long as I don’t have to wait too long.

I adore Penny Reid and her brand of humor and passion and I’m really looking forward to seeing how Kaitlyn and Martin’s relationship progresses.

Parties?” I may have curled my lip in a miniature sneer.

“Yeah, on the island, at some of the other houses, friends of mine. You know, the usual college scene stuff.”

Usual college scene… just a bunch of billionaires’ kids and their friends. It sounded delightful.

“Yeah, no thanks.” I pulled my eyes from his, inspected the rocks. “I don’t like parties. But don’t let that stop you from going.”

    “Parker.”

I sighed, then met his gaze.

    “I want you to come.”

    “No thank you.”

He ground his teeth. “Kaitlyn, you promised you were going to give this a try.”

    “I will…”

Once again he was giving me the severe stare down, likely because my weakly delivered I will didn’t even sound convincing to me.

Managing to swallow around the sudden thickness in my throat, I squared my shoulders so that I was facing him. “Here’s the thing, Sandeke. I am. I am going to give this a try. Despite my worries-”

    “What worries?” He sounded exasperated.

I ignored his question, “Despite my worries and reservations, I’m going to give this the good college try. But I don’t even know how to dance. I can tango like a pro, but I don’t do the body wiggle weird thing. And isn’t that what the kids do these days at parties? Dance?”

He lifted an eyebrow at my excuse—obviously unimpressed—and with two fluid strokes moved to join me.

I stiffened, my eyes wide, and backed up a step at his advance. “What- what are you doing?”

“I’m going to teach you how to dance,” he said simply, already on me, reaching for my body.

I stiffened further, feeling unaccountably breathless as his big hands slipped around my waist and settled on my hips and lower back.

    “But there- but we- but-”

“Shhh…” he said, pulling me closer. “Relax.”

“Create cold fusion,” I murmured in response, unable to relax and placing my hands nowhere, because placing them anywhere on Martin felt perilous to my wellbeing.

He glanced down at me, his eyebrows in a perplexed V. “What does cold fusion have to do with anything.”

“You tell me to relax, which is impossible. I tell you to create cold fusion, which is impossible.”

His answering smile was crooked. “You can’t relax?”

    “No.”

    “Why not.”

    “You know why not.”

“Well, it might help if you touched me.”

    “That will not help.”

    “It might.”

    “It won’t.”

    “Touch me.”

I scowled at his chest, my hands still in the air at my sides. Stupid perfect chest.

“Parker, if we’re going to dance you have to touch me.” He sounded amused and his fingers flexed on my bare skin. I felt the roughened calluses of his palms just before he released my body to grab my hands. He brought them to his shoulders, pressed them there, then returned his own to my hips. I didn’t miss the fact that his hand-placement was now a bit more daring than it had been a moment ago, lower, closer to my bottom.

I swallowed thickly, glaring at my fingers where they touched his perfectly sculpted shoulder.

“Don’t you want to touch me?” he asked, his inflection daring, teasing, but also something else. Something hesitant and uncertain.

I lifted my eyes to his; they were guarded, his smile looked bracing, almost like a grimace, like he was preparing himself for bad news.

I sighed and I knew I sounded resigned and a little pitiful, “Yes…”

His gaze thawed as it dropped to my lips. “Then you should… because I want you to.”

  • Review- The Risk by Skye Jordan

    risk.blog.tour.banner1

    LOVE this book.  LOVED.

I am not a winter sports girl.

I watch it on the Olympics more than anything.  I grew up in Atlanta and we went to the beach and I knew one or two families that skiied.  Fast forward to college, I went to school in the mountains of North Carolina and I went skiing once.  I spent 90% of the time fearing for my life and while being pulled up off my ass by my sweet and patient college boyfriend.  A few years ago, I went to Big Sky, Montana and once again, attempted to ski.  I LOVED Montana, in fact, I love Colorado and Montana and I’d love to go out there again and watch other people ski and snowboard.  My butt was made for sitting on a beach, not sliding down a mountain on it.

Another fun fact about me, I came very close to going to PT school.  I ended up getting a degree in sport management and coaching.  I spent a fair amount of time in the athletic training room, wrapping ankles and treating injured athletes.  So, the rehab and physical therapy aspects of this book were fascinating to me.

Ms. Jordan deftly combined the rehabbing of an elite athlete (physically and mentally) with some super hot passion and romance.  That’s one thing I really love about her, you always get a great plot and some seriously hot sexy times.

Julia has been burned professionally and personally and her trust, where men are concerned, is pretty much nil.  Enter Noah, who is a well- known party hard snow- boarder.  I wondered how in the world Ms. Jordan was going to bring these two together and in more ways than just in the biblical sense.  There was plenty of that because Noah and Julia had chemistry in spades.

I think what I enjoyed was how the professional relationship was developed into a friendship and then blossomed into a form of trust between them.  Developing that kind of trust was a big deal for both of them.  Julia was in entrusted with every aspect of Noah’s care, his diet and his body.  They even began socializing with the same people and she became friends with his friends.  Julia needed friends, she needed people she could trust and she also needed someone that believed in her and her abilities.

I enjoyed every bit of this book and I cannot wait for more from this series!!

Julia couldn’t control the shaking—a combination of fear, rage, and raw adrenaline.

The driver stood outside the car, waiting to open the door for Noah, and she took the moment alone to breathe deep and focus her mind, the way she used to before a competition. It helped, but not nearly as much as she’d hoped. The tremors still rattled through her.

She couldn’t keep her mind drifting to the sick look in Phillips’s eyes when he had her pinned against that wall, and she was pissed, so damn pissed, she’d frozen when she should have slammed her knee into his balls. At the same time, his sheer size and strength made her second-guess her ability to ever make a dent in a man that big, let alone get away after she’d pissed him off.

Then she thought of Noah confronting him… Fear and fury battled in her heart. Her hands clenched; her muscles quivered with tension.

The door opened, and Noah slid in. His hair was falling out of its style, his face was flushed, his jaw tight. He turned toward her, his hands gripping her forearms. “Are you all right?”

“No, I’m not all right,” she blurted. “I’m pissed. I’m pissed as hell. We’ve gone through weeks of work to get your ankle stable. You go to the X Games in a week, Noah, a week. And you start a fight with Goliath? What in the hell is wrong with you?”

Just voicing the reality wound her tighter. But Noah hardly seemed ruffled as he pressed a button that lifted the privacy glass so the driver wouldn’t have to listen to them argue.

“This is your career, your livelihood, your life,” she said. “You could have reinjured yourself. You could have ruined all the work we’ve done. You could have seriously killed your career, for what? What were you thinking?”

He slouched against the seat at an angle, body loose, looking so goddamned sexy in that suit, his hair mussed, a confused expression carving that vertical line between his brows. “I was thinking that the fucker was abusing you. And I sure as hell wasn’t going to stand by and let him have his way until your head cleared enough to set him straight.”

“Just because I didn’t go in for the kill at the first sign of trouble doesn’t mean I wasn’t prepared to do it,” she lied. “I was fine, Noah.”

But she wasn’t fine, and they both knew it. She wasn’t even close to fine. The adrenaline was wearing off, her concern for his well-being fading now that she saw with her own two eyes that he was in one piece, free of pain, and the source of her shakes had transitioned from anger to fear. Fear of what would have happened if Noah hadn’t come into the hallway. Fear of who saw the exchange and what rumors that would bring. Fear of what sick game Phillips would play now.

“Dammit, Noah. All you did was piss him off even more. Now he’s going to think I’m not strong enough to stand up to him, which is only going to give him the green light to come after me with twice the vengeance. I should never have come to this stupid event. Fucking Drake. Every time I listen to him, my life goes into a tailspin.”

Her brain felt like a ball of strung-out Silly Putty, and her emotions bounced between anger and guilt and fear and shame…

Noah leaned toward her, sliding one arm behind her shoulders, the other beneath her knees, and drew her across the seat toward him.

“Stop it.” Julia pushed at his shoulder. “I don’t need a savior, dammit.” But all her squirming and struggling in the small space only succeeded in repositioning herself from sitting on his thighs to straddling his lap. “I’m fine.”

But his arms held her tight. “Maybe I’m not fine.” He slid his hands over her hips, up her sides, and cupped her face. His gaze was deep and dark and overflowing with emotions—anger, residual fear, lust. “Because seeing you with him scared the ever-loving shit out of me.”

He pulled her head down and fitted their lips together. Julia tried to pull back, but Noah slipped his hand behind her neck and held her there as he swept his tongue into her mouth. His other hand curved around her hips, tucking her tight against the hardening rod of heat behind his zipper.

His tongue swirled in hungry waves; lips suckled and sipped. Julia tasted lime and desperation and raw Noah. Heat gathered between her legs; pressure climbed. His arms were tight, his body warm, his mouth hungry. He was holding her, loving her, all without question or accusation. That combined with the adrenaline still pumping through her body set Julia on fire.

She leaned in, sinking her hands into his hair and scraping her nails along his scalp the way he loved. Then she pressed the front of her body to his, wrapped her arms around his neck, and tilted her head to take more of his mouth. Noah groaned in approval, tightened his arms, and lifted his hips, rubbing his stiff cock against her heat.

But it wasn’t enough. Her body raged with sensation, and she needed more. She pulled out of the kiss and went for his belt, button, and zipper. She needed him inside her, filling her. Needed his arms around her. Needed the safety he offered. The unconditional acceptance. Need, need, need. She needed so much—and it all came from one source: Noah.

Noah grabbed her wrists before she reached skin. “I’m not doing another one-off with you, Julia. I want more. Need more. I care about you, goddammit.”

Lust made her mind float and fizz. “This is all we have. You said yourself, we live four hours apart—”

“Give me the rest of your time here. One hundred percent together every minute of the time we have left.”

Why? She had to swallow hard to keep the word from coming out. Sure it was only another week or so, but after what he’d learned about her tonight, she didn’t understand why he’d want more than casual sex without strings.

But one of his hands moved beneath her dress where it rode up on her thighs, his fingers slipping beneath the band of her panties and sliding over her ass. His hands were warm and strong, and Julia sighed with the sensation, until his fingers darted directly to her heat and stroked her opening, making her groan with an urgent hunger. Everything inside her ached with the craving she’d suppressed for weeks, but now she needed his comfort, his trust, his belief. She needed to feel him inside her, filling that empty space that lived at the center of her chest, the one she’d ignored for too long.

Leaning away, she reached for his boxers again.

Noah caught her wrists and held them tight while his open, hungry gaze drilled into hers. “Mine,” he said. “For the time you’re here.”

The thought both thrilled and terrified her. Everything in her mind said no. But her body, her heart, her soul screamed yes. Her brain urged her to make him promise he’d be discreet, but he hadn’t questioned her about Phillips, and he deserved the same unconditional belief.

    She nodded her answer.

Something flickered in his eyes, something dark and sexy. His hands released hers to grip her face firmly, his gaze lowering to her mouth. “Say it.”

She drew a shaky breath. “I’m yours.”

He exhaled in a whoosh, as if he’d been holding it back, and he kissed her hard, his hunger loose and raging.

  • Review ~ Before I Fall by Jessica Scott

Jessica Scott continues to amaze me as she branches out into new genres.  I have a love/hate relationship with NA and I am SUPER picky when it comes to reading.  To be honest, at the end of last year, I’d almost given up on it all together.

Then something interesting happened, a couple of well-established authors that I love, released books in the NA genre.  I guess I felt like there was a certain amount of security in reading their attempts at NA.  So much of the NA genre is entrenched in the first person POV and at times, that can be very annoying (to me).  I’m not up for the woe is me, self -introspective inner monologue.

That being said, Before I Fall is first person POV and so not annoying.  In fact, it’s the opposite of annoying.  I mean, come on, it’s JESSICA SCOTT, people.  If she is writing it, it’s going to be spot on.

Ms. Scott always manages to deftly combine the reality of military life and it’s challenges and how it impacts a person on every level.  On top of that she always writes one hell of a love story and I LOVE that.  After I’ve read one of her books, I feel like I’ve been informed on an important and timely issue.  This book is about fathers and daughters, warriors and caregivers, friends and lovers.  There are so many soldiers/veterans coming home needing care RIGHT NOW and it’s such a huge and heavy responsibility being taken up by family members and loved ones.

In Before I Fall, Beth has such an incredible load on her shoulders.  Her father suffers from back pain and is basically addicted to pain pills because frankly, that’s the only way that he can cope until the VA can fit him in. ( The dichotomy of addiction vs. dependency)  What happens when the meds are gone and the next available VA appointment is in two weeks?  Your choices are to medicate with alcohol and/or go to the ER.  This book really brings home the reality of how messed up the VA system is. On top of taking care of her father, Beth works and goes to school and barely makes ends meet.  The girl just needs to catch a break somehow because she barely keeping her head above water.

Enter Noah.  Ohhh Noah.  He has a lot on his plate too, coming home and trying to resume a somewhat normal life while coping with his own demons from his deployment.  Even with his own problems, Noah is an escape for Beth.  She doesn’t have to take care of him and he makes an effort to make her life easier. It’s like she can actually take a breath and experience life on her own terms for a little bit.  But let me clarify, Noah is not without his own serious problems and those problems directly impact his relationship with Beth.

    “Are you okay?”

Genuine concern in his words,  Noah is nothing like a former soldier to be- nothing like my dad’s friends before he got hurt.  They used to come to the house and drink and play cards and talk endless amounts of trash.  If not for that stupid bravado, my dad might not have gone on his last Airborne jump.  He might not have destroyed his back trying to prove he was still high speed and low drag.

Noah is nothing like the men my father used to call friends. There is no arrogant bravado, no need to cross the line between hoah and stupid.  He is… he is just a good guy.

In a nutshell, this is another incredible book by Ms. Scott.  This is book #1 in the Falling series and I CANNOT wait to read more!

  • Quote-tastic Monday + Review : Confessions of a Reformed Tom Cat by Daisy Prescott

Welcome to Quote-tastic Monday meme hosted by Herding Cats & Burning Soup.

When she walked toward me, I was ninety-percent certain she wanted to slap me.  I spread my stance and tensed for the impact.  Sadly, she wouldn’t be the first woman to smack me or attempt it.  Good thing I was pretty fast at dodging and weaving.

Let’s face it, pretty much every book Daisy Prescott writes is completely quote-tastic.  I always find myself bookmarking and highlighting numerous pages and passages.  The quote up there?  It’s the first paragraph of the book,  I was laughing immediately!

Don’t let the humor fool you though.  While Tom is a smart ass manwhore and has a lot of work to do on himself, he is not a bad guy.  He just needs the right woman to come along and kick him in the ass and Hailey is totally that woman.  She knows Tom from when they were kids and is aware of his (well earned) reputation.  I mean this is a guy who names his boat, MASTER BAITER.  For real.

She smiled to herself and leaned closer to whisper in my ear.  “Thirty-six inches.”

Thirty-six inches?  What does that have to do with anything?  “Um…what?”

“My inseam.”  She lifted her eyebrow knowlingly before excusing herself.

I choked on the liquid in my mouth and started coughing, feeling like hacking up a lung was a viable option.

One thing I especially love about Ms. Prescott’s writing is how she doesn’t hurry her characters along too quickly.  Tom has a lot of  mental work to do, almost having to rework his own point of view in life.  Ms. Prescott never pushes him along too fast, he seems to figure things out so slowly that it feels completely organic.  At one point he has a realization  about Hailey and actually dating her and I could almost see the light bulb go on over his head.  Once he figures it out though, he goes all in!

Another really great thing about this book is Tom’s family.  The Donnely family plays a prevalent and important role in this book and I loved the depth it added.  One thing you cannot doubt about Tom is how much he loves his family.

I truly loved this book.  Upon meeting Tom in John Day’s book (Ready to Fall) you have to wonder how he gets from the jackass he is in that book to the guy he ends up being in the end of Tom Cat.  It’s a lovely journey to take with Tom and Hailey.  As always, Tom Cat is full of the humor, passion and emotional depth I have come to expect and love in a Daisy Prescott book.

She sighed and her hand trailed up my spine.  I didn’t want to get up and break whatever spell the ice storm created. Feelings of contentment and peace spun a sticky web inside me, pushing away the dark thoughts and loneliness.

With each pass of her hand down my back, the web grew larger, wrapping itself around my heart, then my lungs and ribs.  My breathing paused and deepened as the sense of calm strengthened  its hold on my brain.

    Yeah.  Pretty incredible book.

  • 4.5 star Review: Worth the Risk by Claudia Connor

    Worth-the-Risk-Claudia-Connor

Another 4.5 star from Ms. Connor!!

I was in complete denial about this book ending. I wanted more Stephen, more Hannah and more of the McKinney and Walker families.

Stephen. Definitely different from Matt and I appreciate a writer than can write unique characters and Stephen was his own man and what a man he is.

    Rachel

I read this in November of last year and I made some notes when I read it but when it came time for me to write my review, I knew I needed to go back to the book.  Which, you know, is such a chore.  NOT.  I fell right back in love with the McKinney family. I know a book is special when I can go back and read it again and feel all warm and fuzzy.  I ended up taking about two hours and re reading almost every word of this book.

I was reminded of how much I love the male characters that Ms. Connor creates.  I found myself laughing because Hannah is completely surrounded by a very high level of highly protective alpha males.  Between 4 brothers and Stephen, she is swimming in testosterone! It’s great!  It would different if they were complete jerks but they aren’t at all.  Stephen comes off as pretty arrogant and full of himself in the beginning (“Have dinner with me.”)  but I realized that McKinney gene pool prohibits him from descending into complete assholedom.

Did I mention that Hannah has FOUR brothers?  Uh yeah.  The Walker Brothers series is just begging to be written!!!

    Nick- FBI
    Luke- Special Forces
    Zach- Fireman
    Dallas- Cop

Aside from the fantasticness (made that word up) of the McKinney family, Ms. Connor has created two characters that need someone to love and protect them from the ghosts of their pasts.  After Stephen realizes how special Hannah is, he treats her with such reverence and tenderness.  To her credit, Hannah lets Stephen shelter and protect her.  She relishes the safety and protection that he offers her.  Growing up with her protective and loving brothers, one might think that Hannah would rebel against Stephen’s protective nature, instead she flourishes within it.

So many great things about this book.  I suspect Ms. Connor will be another Marie Force for me, an author whose work I can depend upon to be unique and interesting, and that I can read and enjoy endlessly.

If you loved Matt and Abby, I think you’ll enjoy Stephen and Hannah just as much, if not more.  So, if you have not read this book, you need to.  If you haven’t read the first book in this series, Worth the Fall, then get busy and start reading!

  • Release Day Review: A Father’s Fight by JB Salsbury

    RDB Banner

Ohhhh wow.  Hold on to your ovaries.  Blake is back and he is going to be a daddy!   Layla has her hands full with Blake as the baby daddy, because, bless his heart, he is completely overprotective of her.

It’s actually really sweet.  I fell in love with Blake in Fighting to Forget (REVIEW) and I was really happy to hear that Blake and Lyla were getting another book.  It actually started out as a novella and apparently, Blake had a lot to say!

I love seeing a big burly smart ass guy like Blake brought to his knees by a pregnant woman and their child. Blake’s goal in life (at this point) is love and protect his fiance’- Layla,   Axelle (his soon to be adopted daughter) and take care of the new addition to the family. He will do whatever it takes to make sure they are all safe and sound.  One thing I really liked about this book was that it was easy to tell how much Ms. Salsbury loves these characters, it was almost effortless and reminded me of everything I loved about her writing.

There was so much I enjoyed about this book.  I laughed, I cried and I swooned. When that baby entered the world, I was a puddle of goo.  If you’re a fan of this series, do not hesitate to pick this one up asap!
